Update: Another new patch has dropped, so we’ve updated our tactics codes for the best formations in FC 26 to suit the current meta.
As the tactics meta has evolved since the start of FC 26, one thing has become clear: defending is hard.
What you choose to do about that fact is up to you, but there are basically two options to choose from. Either you can surrender to the attacking vibes and go all-out to out-score your opponent, or you can flood the edge of your penalty area with as many bodies as you can to try and stop the onslaught.
Our page on the best formations in FC 26 goes over both of these tactical set-ups, as well as different ways of achieving them with the tools EA Sports has given you.
Interestingly, FC 26 pro players have opted for the latter strategy, essentially giving up on defending as the score in nearly every professional match almost reaches double figures for both teams.
Alternatively, FC content creators and streamers have been more conservative, electing to try and play more traditional football than simply exploiting the most overpowered game mechanics they can find.
Since their introduction, the revamped Custom Tactics and Roles systems have been revolutionary in EA Sports FC. Now in FC 26, not only do you have to think about the best formation to play, but also the roles your players fill within that formation, and how to get the best out of their attributes while they perform their duties on the pitch.
To give you a competitive edge, we’ve found the strongest meta Custom Tactics codes which unlock the best FC 26 formations to play in both Ultimate Team and other game modes.
First, we’ll go through tactics codes favoured by top streamers, pro FC players and high-level competitors for what would be considered the “meta” formations and tactical set-ups. Then we’ll go through some tactics codes which emulate the styles of real life managers and teams, both in the Premier League and other top leagues around the world.
Next, we’ll discuss why these formations are the best, what they allow you to do, and what kind of roles you want your players to play within these systems, before finally discussing how this is completely different in Career Mode.

What are the overall best formations in FC 26?
While we’re only just coming up to the game’s full release, we still have a decent idea of which formations are going to be the best at this early point in the meta.
The new switch to competitive gameplay in online modes means that there is now much less pass error, and both build-up play and shooting are more consistent and predictable moment-to-moment.
This means that the best formations in FC 26 make full use of this lightning-fast game-speed, allowing you to thread together intricate passing moves which progress the ball very quickly.
However, they’re also designed to give you a solid foundation to defend against the same thing happening to you, and help provide cover as everyone gets used to the more manual defending in FC 26.
4-5-1 - Code: LZ$PMVLTVJ#N
- Build-up Style: Balanced
- Defensive Approach: High
After the most recent patch, 4-5-1 is probably the most popular formation.
The more midfield focused 4-5-1 flat, and its variations 4-2-3-1 and 4-1-4-1, seem to be big beneficiaries of FC 26’s tweaked game mechanics .
In FC 26 Competitive Gameplay, on-the-ball players no longer feel the negative effects of low stamina. This means you can run attacking midfielders very hard and still have them feel good on the ball and provide meaningful support to your striker. So while you technically have fewer players up front, box crashers and playmakers seem to stream backwards and forwards really well.
Defensively, particularly if you’re playing with a CDM or 2, 4-5-1 can be as solid as 4-4-2 but with more passing options to play out from the back once you win possession. 4-1-4-1 in particular seems extremely difficult to break down at this point in the game, especially with most people’s proclivity to play inside forwards in a narrow line.
These advantages also make 4-5-1 a great early game option if you’ve only packed one decent striker, but find yourself with a lot of good CMs (as happens to most people).
4-4-2 - Code: U5u?eqWaeQQW
- Build-up Style: Short Passing
- Defensive Approach: High
While there have been many more popular formations throughout the year so far, lots of Pro players have been sticking to 4-4-2.
It makes sense, since at the beginning of an EA football game’s lifecycle, good old 4-4-2 is the best formation to start with . This is because it offers a solid defensive framework, while also having a good amount of players in attacking positions.
Usually, Pro FC players and streamers tend to err on the side of caution with robust full-backs set to defend, two holding midfielders and advanced forwards to hold an attacking threat. However, you can vary the roles in your team depending on whichever area of the pitch you’re struggling with.
If you’re struggling to score, you can set your wide midfielders to Inside Forward and push your full-backs to Balanced instead of Defend to provide width and more options as you play forward. However, in this situation you’d probably want to set both of your central midfield players to defend, otherwise you will be very open to the counter.
With the addition of Competitive Gameplay, the match speed in FC 26 has been cranked up even further to never-before-seen heights, meaning you can turn defence into attack very quickly.
Formations favoured by pros aren’t always the best for us normal people, because they’re literally better at the game than us and can create chances with fewer players using individual dribbling ability and skill moves to carve out an opening. If 4-4-2 isn’t working for you, it might be worth checking out 4-1-2-1-2 , a narrower formation with a CAM which is getting a lot of buzz at the start of the game.
5-4-1 - Code: nBDRYVqtxvkp
- Build-up Style: Balanced
- Defensive Approach: High
In the upper echelons of play, 5-at-the-back formations are often employed to pack out the defensive space so there’s even less room for attackers to play in.
However, because you’re basically assigning 7 players to defend, you need to be very confident in both your attacker’s capabilities and your own offensive play to use these tactics.
Pro players are usually happy to sacrifice players in the attacking third for more solidity because they’ve mastered all of the most overpowered skill moves, can finish their chances consistently with low-driven shots and are using the most meta Icons and Heroes possible.
But if you’ve got rapid forwards and want to be very hard to beat, 5-4-1 is just about the sweatiest formation you can set up with.
4-3-3 - Code: QZsQxWqYa%MS
- Build-up Style: Balanced
- Defensive Approach: High
However, for a more offensive focus, 4-3-3 is similar to 4-5-1, but with more explicit attacking impetus . It requires quick and mobile midfielders to cover the larger distance between defence and attack, but allows you to play faster; or more “vertically” to use the pretentious technical term.
This works very well with Competitive Gameplay’s snappier, less error-prone passing and zippy player movement. But, like I said, if you’re playing against someone who’s very good at a high press, then you can find yourself with fewer short passing opportunities because of the bigger distance between your defensive midfielders and wide forwards.
With that said though, once you do clear that press you can often isolate defenders against quicker and more skilful wingers. This is probably the formation to pick if you’ve managed to snag a good skiller or wonderkid like Nico Williams or Lamine Yamal from packs.
Alternatively, if you pack good LM and RM players early, you can also make 4-3-3 by setting your wide players to Inside Forward in a 4-2-3-1 off the ball formation. This tactic is how FC tries to simulate Xabi Alonso’s Real Madrid and Slot’s Liverpool. However, this can make your forward line quite narrow, with width coming from attacking fullbacks. Again, pro players would never use a tactic like this because it leaves you too open to a counter-attack, but it’s definitely something to consider if you’re more in the game for fun than all-out competition.

Why are these the best meta formations?
Currently, the FC 26 meta rewards two things over anything else: narrow, compact build-up and what’s called " left-stick dribbling “.
Essentially, the most reliable way to goal is to keep your players close together to give yourself as many quick passing options as possible, while taking advantage of the reduced AI defending in competitive gameplay to dribble around defenders in tight spaces.
The fast interplay and rapid changes of direction allow you to pull apart your opponent’s defensive line to create scoring oportunities.
The best formations in FC 26 allow you to do this more regularly, placing attacking players in a tight structure that makes 1-2 passes slick and easy to pull off.
On the flip-side of this, while defending, these formations pack the central space around your box with plenty of bodies , making it more difficult to dribble through the middle and crowding out passing lanes, thereby stopping overloads.
You will notice that most of the best meta formations have a relatively flat back 4, with another holding or deep-lying midfielder sitting in front of them. If you play against the Legendary or Ultimate difficulty AI, this is a tactic you will see it employ a lot; as soon as you break away, there are 5 people standing on the halfway line waiting to tackle you.
The idea here is to throw a net over the oppositions attack and stop any of your defenders getting isolated or your whole defense overloaded. Because of the number of defenders you have back, you can afford to be patient, jockey the attacker by holding L2, and wait for a good opportunity to win the ball with a manual tackle or interception .

What are the best formations for Career Mode in EA Sports FC 26?
With the new split between Competitive and Authentic gameplay in FC 26, the meta-game of which formations are best for each mode are now quite different.
Whereas the effects of low stamina have basically been removed from Competitive, you need to be much more mindful of how you use your whole squad in Authentic, where your tired players can feel sluggish on the ball.
There’s also a lot more pass error in Authentic, with a much longer wind-up time to hit longer-ranged passes than in online game modes. However, here are a few formations to try out to start playing slick football again:
4-2-1-3 Short Passing - Code: wZMwhg#J8yuS
While online you need to play defensively to counter the lightning-fast potential of quick counters, if you’re playing Career Mode you need to be much more attacking - particularly if you’re playing on higher difficulty levels like Legendary.
If you have too many defensive players in “Authentic” gameplay, your players will just stand impotently in their shape, tickling hospital passes in the vague direction of their teammates which just get swallowed up by the massive gaps between them.
To get around this, set your build-up style to “Short Passing” . If you have fast defenders with high sprint speed, consider pumping your Defensive Approach to “High” , so your team plays further up the pitch. This can help to alleviate the annoying situation where there’s a huge swathe of grass between where you lose the ball and the players looking to retrieve it, making you constantly sprint to cover that distance.
Now those basics are out of the way, you can actually think about your formation. Again, I feel like you need to be attacking here, favouring proper wingers instead of wide midfielders in a similar role, which is again opposite to how you’d set up online.
While one holding midfielder is a good idea, the new box crasher role is fantastic for creating overloads in the middle of the pitch. Therefore you usually need 2 CDMs to make use of it. This leads to 4-2-1-3 being the best balance of wing play, central passing options and genuine offensive threat.
4-4-2 - Code: JBhNSNkUVJHr
Alternatively, if you’ve got a lot of good strikers in your squad and you want to fit them in, there are variations of 4-4-2 which feel really nice too.
Start with the 4-1-3-2 formation and again set your build-up style to Short Passing and defensive approach to High if you think you’ve got the players for it.
Like the previous formation, this tactic is about getting enough players in attacking positions to create a fluid interplay which actually allows you to break down Legendary difficulty’s defence.
Using the Box Crasher role for your CDM basically flips your CM and CDM, but also creates a really nice “rest defence” , which is how you set your team up to win the ball back when you lose it while attacking. In this tactic, your central players will be well placed to hunt down the ball high up the pitch, rather than having to sprint forward 10 yards every single time you lose the ball.
Despite the emphasis on attacking, setting one of your strikers to False 9 is actually very important with this formation . Without a CAM, if you don’t ask one of your players to drop slightly deeper there will be a big gap between your midfield and attack which can make it awkward to counter.
If you’re playing as one of the top teams in a division, go full Prime Pep Man City and change your Wingbacks’ focus to “Support” . This pushes them into the attacking space as well, providing another option for when you’re camped on the edge of an opposition penalty area.
