Update 21st January: We added some more details of how to increase your star rating while Birdwatching, as well as more details of some new birds we saw in Heartopia today!
Alongside the more common fishing and bug-catching, Heartopia invites citizens to partake in a touch of ornithology and birding, as you prowl the forests, plains and streets of your cozy surroundings in search of rare and beautiful birds to take pictures of.
As your knowledge of birdwatching increases, you gain an eye to spot even more exciting birds, including tropical birds passing through your island home as they migrate.
While it’s easiest just to snap pictures of birds while they’re perched on a branch, if you manage to snag a picture of them doing something a bit more interesting like chirping, preening, flapping their wings or even in flight, you’ll get more points and experience towards your collection.
What’s more, some rare birds can only be spotted while partaking in special events, so check your map regularly for the Nest of Hundreds event icons.

How to get more stars Birdwatching in Heartopia
Of course, finding and photographing each bird is only a fraction of the Birdwatching hobby in Heartopia. Each bird photographed has a star rating system, and it’s not until you’ve captured that elusive 5-Star photo of a bird species that you can consider its entry into your collection fully “complete”.
So, how exactly do you increase that star rating? Well, one thing you’ll need to do is to continue practicing the Birdwatching hobby so that you can level up regularly — some better-quality shots are only possible at higher skill levels.
However, capturing birds engaging in specific behaviours and activities can increase your photo’s quality even from the first level of the hobby. An idling bird will only ever net you a 1-Star photo, but birds that are — for example — chirping, pecking around on the ground for food, or grooming their feathers will guarantee a 2-Star photo at the very least. Listen out for loud digetic birdsong and watch nearby birds closely for any interestings animations to capture a higher-quality shot.
Reaching Level 4 of the Birdwatching skill also unlocks the chance of achieving Perfect Photographs . If your framing and timing are just right, so that the bird is right in the centre of the frame and you’re zoomed in close, then you have a chance at receiving a Perfect Photo, which automatically adds one star to the quality rating.
Also starting at Level 4, you can purchase Auto Bird Whistles from the birdwatching instructor, Bailey J. Activating an Auto Bird Whistle will ensure that birds in the vicinity change their poses more frequently during the tool’s duration, allowing you to take more varied and high-quality pictures!
