Update 5th February: We added details of some new bugs we found in Heartopia today!
I have no idea how common bug catching is as a hobby in real life, but in life sims it’s almost as ubiquitous as fishing – that is to say, you’ll never fit in around this wholesome chibi town if you don’t partake several times a week. Heartopia is no exception: at launch, this newly-released “slow life sim” includes insect catching as one of its seven hobbies.
When you begin your bug catching journey you’ll only have a dozen or so specimens at your disposal, but continue to level up and you’ll unlock higher rarity and quality bugs to humanely trap using your giant bubble blower.
Like almost every collectible in Heartopia, bugs are typically native to just one of the various map regions, which includes four outer biomes as well as three inner areas. Furthermore, some bugs will spawn in any region as long as their preferred habitat is present, while others will only appear during the Bait the Insects event that takes place periodically.
Read on below for every Heartopia bug catching location we’ve found so far!

How to get more stars Bug Catching in Heartopia
Capturing one of each different type of insect is only a fraction of the Insect Catching hobby in Heartopia. Each bug in your collection has a star rating system, and it’s not until you’ve added a 5-Star specimen from a species that you can consider its entry into your collection fully “complete”.
So, how exactly do you increase that star rating? Well, I’ll be honest, we’re still in the process of figuring out exactly how it works, although we know for sure that improving your Insect Catching hobby level allows you to catch higher-rarity bugs, especially ones you unlocked on the lower levels.
The game does give one clue as to what makes a higher-quality bug though: apparently, it’s all about size . Oddly enough, we don’t currently think there’s a visible difference in the way a bug looks before you catch it to indicate that it’s a bigger specimen, but if we do figure out a better method than trial-and-error for identifying bigger bugs we’ll be sure to let you know.
Where is the Sulkowsky’s Morpho in Heartopia?
You might have noticed a bug unlocked in your catalogue that you can’t find for the life of you: Sulkowsky’s Morpho .
Don’t panic: you’re probably not doing anything wrong. Although this bug is technically unlocked at Level 1 of the Insect Catching hobby, there’s not much chance of you seeing one until you hit Level 4. That’s because the Sulkowsky’s Morpho can only be spawned by the Inflatable Insect Attractor single-use tool, and you won’t be able to buy those from hobby mentor Naniwa prior to hitting the higher level.
Our testing indicates that the Inflatable Insect Attractor currently isn’t very well-optimised and will only spawn a Sulkowsky’s Morpho if you’ve caught at least two to three bugs in its radius already. This is trickier than it sounds, since it only has a one-minute duration, plus a very small area of effect, and currently doesn’t actually have a high spawn rate of its own (between zero and two bugs per minute). So you’re best to go somewhere where there are already a lot of bugs around if you want to increase your chances of nabbing this exclusive butterfly.
