Update 20th January: We updated this page with information on Black Truffles, Matsutake, and Bizarre Mushrooms!

The world of Heartopia is abundant with natural resources such as fruits, vegetables, flowers, trees, ores, and so much more. Mushrooms are one such category all to themselves, and can be useful for a number of purposes – from cooking stamina-boosting recipes to trading with neighbours as part of daily resident requests.

There are four kinds of mushrooms to harvest in Heartopia, and each of them spawns in a specific location. Most of the time, any mushroom will do, but if you’re eager to complete your collections then you’ll want to make sure you can lay your hands on all the different types. Read on for how to find all the different mushrooms in Heartopia .

Heartopia mushroom locations

Mushrooms in Heartopia can be divided into three broad categories: common mushrooms , bizarre mushrooms , and rare mushrooms . Here’s where to find each one.

Common Mushrooms

You might already have guessed that there’s a connection between Heartopia’s four map regions and the four types of common mushrooms you can harvest. Sure enough, each region in Heartopia has a native type of mushroom that you won’t find anywhere else.

Penny Bun Mushrooms only grow in the Forest region, where they are mostly found at the base of pine trees and next to fallen logs.

For most purposes in Heartopia, mushrooms are interchangeable – for example, when a daily resident request calls for you to collect “X” number of mushrooms, it won’t matter what specific type(s) they are.

However, collecting different types of mushrooms does have its advantages. Not only does it add more entries to your general catalogue — which you’ll be rewarded for filling out — but cooking dishes such as Grilled Mushrooms or Mushroom Pie with four mushrooms of the same type will unlock a secret recipe variant .

Bizarre Mushrooms

Bizarre Mushrooms are inedible variants on the four common mushroom types found in Heartopia. They spawn rarely under the same conditions as the common mushroom types they resemble, and can be told apart from their edible siblings thanks to their unnaturally bright colours (three colour variants for each species of Bizarre Mushroom, which again seem to spawn at random).

Despite Massimo warning you against consuming Bizarre Mushrooms, don’t worry, the game won’t actually let you do that (and despite the slight confusion of the names, they’re not component ingredients of Bizarre Food or Bizarre Drink).

I’ve only found the Pink Button Mushroom and the Red Shiitake so far, but the Collections catalogue informs me that there are 12 Bizarre Mushroom variants in total. Gotta catch ’em all! |Image credit:VG247 / XD

So far, Bizarre Mushrooms don’t seem to have any purpose in-game other than being a fun extra collectable type that you can display around your home if you so choose. However, Heartopia is a live service game with plenty of new features planned in the coming months, so it wouldn’t be too surprising to see Bizarre Mushrooms gain more significance in a future event or update.

Rare Mushrooms

There are also two completely separate types of rare mushrooms in Heartopia: Black Truffle and Matsutake .

Black Truffle mushrooms are theoretically available to harvest from the very beginning of the game, but they’re a little more hidden away than the four common mushrooms, so can take you a while longer to find.

If you’re eager to get your hands on some Black Truffles, you first need head over to Forest Island. If you’re unfamiliar with this part of the map, it’s what it sounds like: a sub-area of the Forest region in the north-east of the map, it’s an island connected to Heartopia’s mainland by a short bridge.

Black Truffles only spawn on Forest Island. Like Penny Buns or Shiitake, they can usually be found near the base of trees. However, there’s a slight difference: Black Truffles appear as dark mounds of soil, so you’ll need to locate these and dig them out by hand (since Heartopia doesn’t have a shovel tool).

These dirt mounds representing Black Truffle spawn locations can be tricky to spot. Luckily it’s a fair bit easier in the snow, giving you some idea of what to look out for in the future. |Image credit:VG247 / XD

Black Truffles can be used to cook a secret Mushroom Pie variant recipe, as well as some other unique dishes at higher levels of the Cooking hobby. Note though that there’s no secret Black Truffle variant recipe for Grilled Mushrooms, a disappointing fact that I learned the hard way.
