Update 9th February: We added information on how to catch the Frostspore Whale Shark!
Heartopia ’s Winter Frost Season marks the debut of seasonal content following the game’s global release. As you might expect from the name, the theme of this event and its many activities revolves around an unusually harsh cold snap on the island – expected to last from January 31st until March 13th .
During this season, most of Heartopia’s collections get a few time-limited additions that you can hunt down in exchange for bragging rights, in-game gifts, and the sweet sweet feeling of ticking items off a list. The game’s extensive Fish collection is no different, with the introduction of a handful of Frostspore fish variants .
How to catch Frostspore fish in Heartopia
In the story of Heartopia’s Winter Frost Season, Frostspore fish are variants of some regular fish species that have become infected with a chill due to the low temperatures in the seas surrounding the island. Luckily, this doesn’t seem to have done them much harm, except for making them look ethereally beautiful (if worryingly fragile).
To begin catching Frostspore fish, you first need to talk to Vanya, the fishing hobby mentor who has temporarily relocated to the northern beach in Onsen Mountain to help oversee the seasonal festivities there. Complete the short quest he gives you and you’ll be able to begin collecting Frostspore fish.

There are five Frostspore fish variants in Heartopia’s Winter Frost Season:
- Frostspore King Crab
- Frostspore Ocean Sunfish
- Frostspore Puffer Fish
- Frostspore Seahorse
- Frostspore Whale Shark
Notably, although all of these are variants of regular year-round fish types in Heartopia, they aren’t bound by the same conditions – that is to say, their Fishing hobby level requirement, along with their preferred weather, location, and time of day, don’t match that of their ordinary cousins. Instead, all these Frostspore fish can only be caught by fishing in the Old Sea off the coast of Onsen Mountain . They are available all day , during all weather conditions , and you only need to be at Fishing level 1 in order to catch them.

So, what’s the catch? Well, there isn’t really one, except for the fact that Frostspore fish are still comparatively rare. Fishing random shadows in Old Sea will eventually turn them up, but a much more effective way of completing your collection in a timely fashion is to use Mermaid Fish Attractors to spawn multiple fish at a time in a single location. While it’s not guaranteed, this will usually net you one or two Frostspore fish per session.
How to catch Frostspore Whale Shark in Heartopia
The Frostspore Whale Shark works a little differently to the other Frostspore fish. Unlocked during Week 2 of Winter Frost Season, the final addition to this Fashionwave’s fish collection can only be caught under a specific set of circumstances.
First, you need to approach fishing hobby mentor Vanya and initiate a Frostspore Fishing Event. At the end of the event, there’s a random chance (seemingly improved by catching as many of the other four types of Frostspore fish as you can) that Vanya will announce a time extension — this indicates that the Frostspore Whale Shark has appeared .

Fortunately, five minutes will be added to the timer at this point, and the Frostspore Whale Shark is fairly easy to spot: it’ll be a large shadow so close to the edge of the water that it’ll be partly submerged in the sandbar. You won’t need perfume or a fish attractor to make it appear either — it should spawn in as soon as the extra time starts.
