Update 20th January: We tested what happens when you run out of Energy in Heartopia so you don’t have to!

Your character in Heartopia won’t get tired just because they’ve gone too long without sleep or food, but nevertheless, the game does contain an Energy system. Like most life sims that aren’t going for full-on realism, your energy will reduce only when your character does high-intensity physical activities like chopping trees, reeling in fish, or digging in the garden.

Energy management isn’t a huge issue in Heartopia: it’s easy to lose a lot of energy without realising it, but fortunately it’s also very easy to refill your energy bar. Read on below for every method of regaining Energy in Heartopia , plus a few of our observations about their effectiveness.

How to regain Energy in Heartopia

Energy doesn’t regenerate on its own in Heartopia , but you can regain energy in the following ways:

  • Sleeping on a bed will refill energy at a steady rate of +1 every 5 seconds. Notably, if you end your play session with your character asleep in a bed, your next play session will begin with your energy fully restored.
  • Eating food will instantly refill a variable chunk of energy based on the quality of the recipe and its component ingredients . You can also eat certain raw ingredients like fruits for a smaller boost of energy.
  • Bathing , either in a tub at home or by sitting in one of the pools at Onsen Mountain, will restore +1 energy every 10 seconds.
  • Collecting an energy gift by popping any randomly spawned gift bubble that has a green upwards-pointing arrow inside it; these convey a variety of energy effects, including gradual refill buffs.
  • Interacting with other players , for example by high-fiving a friend, grants a buff that will restore energy over time, which can be activated once per real-world day.

Note: Energy is capped at 100 points, unless you have a temporary buff active that extends its capacity. Any Energy gained above the cap will be retained indefinitely until it’s used up.

In conclusion, it’s always worth making your way back to your house and putting your character to bed before ending your play session, since energy won’t regenerate automatically even while you’re logged off.

It’s also well worth focusing on the cooking and gardening hobbies early on, since this allows you to craft high-quality dishes with better ingredients that will restore more Energy.

What happens if you run out of Energy in Heartopia?

Running out of Energy in Heartopia comes in two stages: when your character’s Energy is depleted below 20 points, they won’t be able to run any more — meaning that movement speed is capped at a slow walk unless you hop into a vehicle — and you’ll receive a pop-up prompt to eat or rest.

If you ignore this and your Energy hits zero, your character will gain the Exhausted debuff and will no longer be able to do anything that costs Energy — such as chopping trees, watering plants, or engaging in most hobby activities related to fishing , bug catching , birdwatching , or pet care.

However, unlike in some other social sims, running out of Energy won’t cause you to pass out — your character will still be able to move around, but will be slow to control and won’t have nearly as many activities open to them until they regain some Energy.

You’ll need plenty of energy if you want to swing your axe arm in order to collect your daily allowance of Roaming Oak Timber and Flawless Flourite , the rarest wood and stone resources in Heartopia, respectively. And whatever you do, don’t forget to redeem any Heartopia gift codes you might not have claimed yet!
