Where Winds Meet is a massive open world RPG that celebrates the Wuxia genre of classic Chinese fiction where superpowered martial artists do battle using larger-than-life techniques.
You can basically think about it like a free-to-play Assassin’s Creed, as you explore a huge, period-set landscape completing quests, collecting resources and learning powerful new abilities.
But that’s not to say Where Winds Meet is all stoic and artsy. There’s a definite flavour of fun and mischief as you travel from place to place.
Like the famous drunken monkey style of kung fu, many of the different techniques you learn in Where Winds Meet are inspired by anthropomorphic animals. So as often as you’re clashing swords in stylised action you’re learning Tai Chi from a honey-crazed bear or how to flap like a furious wild goose.
You’re used to getting sent on wild goose chases in video games, but in Where Winds Meet the wild goose chases you.
But with that in mind, the sheer amount of content present in Where Winds Meet makes it one of the more complicated but compelling free-to-play releases. Where other games have gotten more and more streamlined, this is constantly throwing dense new systems, mini-games and game mechanics at the player, and not only expects you to make use of them all but remember how they fit together as well.
